Didn’t It Rain?

This love of my life speaks of her past lives to me

I ask her how they’re better than what she did yesterday

she says the greatest thing is simply to be

I say to be cannot grow the crops or the weeds

Didn’t it rain mama,

didn’t it rain?

We had the time of our lives when the skies were the darkest

I don’t really think that these clouds will ever lift

you just rise your head to where the sun has blessed

and you say a prayer for your feet on the ground

didn’t it rain mama,

didn’t it rain?

I remember waking up knee deep and thinking

how I’m turning twenty-two and that turns to twenty-four

and your twenties turn into your sixties while you’re dreaming

You were right when you said the that sky was falling

didn’t it rain mama,

didn’t it rain?

I look around in the flood for a body or a soul

and I look to your body for so very many things

let me buy you a drink, one that’s nice and cold

see I never pay, the grave buys em for me

didn’t it rain mama,

didn’t it rain?

All will be well and all manner of rain fell

I’m gonna say it ’til I mean it, all will be well

oh, sweet lady pray for us drowning hearts in hell

all the sky just fell but all manner will be well

didn’t it rain mama,

didn’t it rain?

A love in my life spoke of past lives to me

now that’s what she is, she’s a drop in the sea

I have this dream about my dying daddy

flashes of lightening and then thunder sets him free

didn’t it rain mama,

didn’t it rain?
